Getting to Know the Leopard (Panthera pardus)

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is a carnivorous mammal of the felid family. Like the other felids of the Panthera genus, the leopard has a modification in the hyoid bone that allows it to roar. It is the most widely distributed big cat, inhabiting large parts of Africa and Asia, from the Middle East to the Pacific Ocean. Because of this, its habitat varies greatly, ranging from tropical forests to grasslands, deserts, and mountainous areas.

One of the habitats where this spectacular animal lives is located in the country of Ethiopia. One of the ethnic groups in this country speaks Amharic, one of the official languages of this African nation, and refers to this feline as “Nebiri.”

This word is not only used to name it but also serves as a sign of respect and admiration for this great and imposing feline. This fascination is shared by the entire Nebiri team and is reflected in every magical encounter with this animal. The leopard is not only an elegant and beautiful creature but also resilient and incredibly strong.

These characteristics are evident in its behavioral plasticity, which allows it to persist in areas where other big cats have gone extinct. However, this adaptability does not make it immune to threats such as habitat loss and fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching.

Currently, nine different leopard subspecies are recognized, varying in weight, size, coloration, and even habits. Not only are several subspecies critically endangered, but the loss of their range is also greater than expected, posing a serious threat not only to the species itself but also to the balance of ecosystems.

More research is needed to better understand the main threats leopards face both locally and globally. However, above all, a strong commitment is required from governments to implement effective cross-border conservation policies, as well as an informed and engaged population that demands real protection and takes action accordingly.

The Nebiri Explorer team aims to contribute to the conservation of this and many other species by offering a new concept of travel—combining conservation, adventure, photography, and awareness. You will have the opportunity to travel while learning about and enjoying numerous species in the magical places of our planet.
